Chicago's most iconic sunsets of the year happened last weekend during "Chicagohenge". What is "Chicagohenge"? The name “Chicagohenge” is a nod to Stonehenge, a prehistoric rock monument built in England that was designed to line up with the Summer and Winter Solstices. Twice a year Chicago's sunsets and sunrises align perfectly with the streets & buildings of the city's East-West corridor grid! (You can thanks Mrs. O'Leary's Cow for the new improved grid system of streets after the Chicago Fire). This phenomena occurs during the Spring and Autumnal equinoxes... and last weekend was the Fall equinox and the second "Chicagohenge" of the year. This unique experience of the Equinoxes aligning with our city streets brings out literally hundreds of professional and amateur photographers alike, all looking to capture the perfect picture. The best place to catch the equinox is from any East-West street corridor between Kinzie and Madison. And, probably the best spot to watch it is at the intersection of Washington and Michigan Ave. along Millennium Park.
Chicago's most well known photographer, Barry Butler (@BarryButler9) has captured this year's Chicagohenge like no other photographer. The Chicago native has posted a number of this years Chicagohenge photographs on his Instagram page. I highly recommend you check it our as it is quite simply stunning. I've copied some pictures off his IG and re-posted them. If you'd like to see more photos go to his IG or check out the Instagram hashtag #chicagohenge . You won't be disappointed.
Save this post for next Spring when the Spring Equinox will be March 19 2024. If you click on this guide from Bucketlisters you'll have all the info you need for the best times and spots to go out and photograph this for yourself !
