A little history of this song... Quiet Town                  by The Killers

The Killers are an American rock band formed in Las Vegas in 2001 by Brandon Flowers (lead vocals, keyboards, bass) and Dave Keuning (lead guitar, backing vocals). The Killers  are considered one of the biggest rock bands of the 21st century, selling more than 28 million records worldwide, including 10.8 million in the US alone. Today's Song of the Day 'Quiet Town' is from their 2021 Album "Pressure Machine." The song is a sad song dealing with a tragedy that we have all heard about- the death(s) of a teen-ager being killed by a moving train. In 1994, Tiffany JaNae Taylor and Raymond Leo Newton were killed in a grade-crossing accident with a Union Pacific train. The couple, who were both from Brandon Flowers' hometown of Nephi, Utah, were just 17 years old. The Killers frontman was in the eighth grade at the time of the tragic event. During this Country heartbreaker, Flowers laments the loss of the two seniors from his high school. He admitted to NME that as he wrote the song he found himself still really affected by the train accident. "I had seen one of them that morning," Flowers said. "They had a baby. I didn't go to grief counseling, they weren't my best friends – but I was just shocked at how emotional I was when I started to write this verse." The death of these 2 teen-agers shows what a long lasting effect this had on Flowers as he didn't write this song until 27 years later. Sad!

A little history of this song...  Tell It to the Night          by Munster Point Project

Today I'm going to introduce you to a new band that I heard on 'Release Radar' on Spotify. The name of the band is The Muster Point Project (TMPP) and is the work of Kevin Franco, a singer/songwriter who splits his time between his home in Calgary, Alberta and Santiago Chille and three of his friends. I think it's always important to see what is coming up around the bend in the Music Industry and these guys are just beginning the process. Today's Song of the Day comes off the band's 2023 EP "Ship to Shore" and is entitled 'Tell it to the Night.' The song talks about the narrator's inability to share his life's secrets with someone as he really has no one that important in his life, so in his quiet moment he "tells (his secrets it to the the night." I liked the song and think it's a good start for the band. Give it a couple spins and see what you think.

A little history of this song...  Morning Zoo                 by Ratboys

Another band that you may/may not have heard, but has been putting out great indie-rock for 10 years is Ratboys. Ratboys are an American indie rock band from Chicago formed by Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan. Rolling Stone named Ratboys second album "GN " one of the "15 Great Albums You Probably Didn't Hear in 2017", while Uproxx rock critic Steven Hyden named the album one of the best albums of the year. Today's Song of the Day 'Morning Zoo' is from the 2023 LP "The Window" and Steven Hyden seems to like even more than Ratboys previous LP's. Of the Album and song he writes: "This extremely enjoyable and consistent Chicago band specializes in a genre I call “Just Good-Ass Indie Music.” It’s not terribly specific or descriptive, but people know exactly what you mean when you say it. “Just Good-Ass Indie Music.” it is not glamorous or trendy. But a quality band who make records that you end up listening to 5,000 times without realizing it. "The Window" is that kind of record. I think you'll like this particular song as well..“The lyrics are meant to express the frustration and confusion that comes along with hanging out at a personal crossroads, where every day feels the same and the same big questions keep nagging at you from the back of your head,” Julia Steiner said. Let me know what you think of this Chicago band as they have become one of my favorite Indie bandds as well.

A little history of this song...  Heartbreak Beat              by Psychedelic Furs

Let's end Playlist # 9's volume on a great new-wave song 'Heartbreak Beat' from the 80's by the Psychedelic Furs. Songfacts interviewed frontman Richard Butler and although he was born in the UK, Butler considers himself a bona-fide New Yorker and often finds inspiration from the Big Apple. With the "Midnight to Midnight" album, he hoped to capture the "very urban, very nighttime" feeling of the city after dark. He told Winner magazine in 1986: "It's my interpretation of being in a place. There's a song called 'Heartbreak Beat' and it's about that feeling when you walk through Washington Square Park and you've got all the boxes going and it sounds like this huge phase-shifter. New York has definitely affected the feel of the songs. I very much pick up on what's around me, steal things, phrases, the feeling of being out at night in New York." Along with 'Pretty in Pink', 'Heartbreak Beat'  turned out to be the band's 2 biggest hits and they both occurred in 1986. Hoped you liked this Volume!!! I'll be back in a few weeks with Playlist #10 and another 36 songs, new and classic, that I hope you'll like!

Enjoy!!
