A little history of this song..... Eyes Wide Open Gotye

Gotye, is a Belgian-born Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His 2011 single 'Somebody That I Used to Know' from the album "Making Mirrors", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the best-selling song of 2012. But as I like to do on this blog... is to dig a little deeper and find deep tracks that are just as good. Today's Song of the Day is one such track. Entitled 'Eyes Wide Open' (if nothing else you gotta love the title... sounds vaguely familiar!) it was first released as a single in October 2010. The song also appeared on Gotye’s critically acclaimed 2011 album "Making Mirrors", which went on to win a 2013 Grammy Award for “Best Alternative Music Album”. Although positively reviewed, the song did not experience the same commercial success as other songs off that album. This song is written from the perspective of a dystopic future looking back at the ecological destruction caused to the Earth by the present day generation, thus creating the future dystopia that the song refers to. More specifically, the song is likely a reference to the unwillingness of the present day generation to take concerted action to prevent climate change cause by the combustion of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Okay, I know all that is pretty heavy for a Rock song, but I think that after you give this record a few spins you'll like it.

Enjoy!!

A little history of this song..... From the Right Angle    by Dawes

Today's Song of the Day 'From the RightAngle' comes from Dawes 2013 "Stories Don't End" Album. If you're unfamiliar with Dawes, the indie/rock band was conceived by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith iin 2011 in Southern California. and have enjoyed succes all over the country with their indie/rock sound. 'From the RightAngle' Dawes reaches a crossroads in their music. By taking the best of 1970's classic songwriting and marrying it to a contemporary Americana feel they now find themselves in that heady position where they are seen as torchbearers to somewhat of a new sound for them. The song is about a a guy lamenting to his girl that if she looks at him in "the right angle, or the right light" that he could take of her; although she has doubts about the relationship knnowing him for what he is. It's a good song and a departurre for Dawes  from the accustomed sound you expect from the band, but it is sure one that you'll like. This is a great song!

Enjoy!!

A little history of this song..... How Can You Stand There   by The English Beat

Today we're going to cover a genre that I don't think I have blogged about too often-Ska Music ; and one of the better Ska bands out there-- The Beat. The Beat has been around since the early 80's and are still putting out albums even in the 2020's. The Beat hailed from working class, industrial Birmingham, England. When The Beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval. Into this storm came The Beat, trying to calm the waters with their simple message of love and unity set to a great dance beat. The Beat were all about inclusion, and this showed in their personnel and their music influences. The band crossed over fluidly between soul, reggae, pop and punk, and from these they created an infectious dance rhythm. They became an overnight sensation and one of the most popular and influential bands of the British Two Tone Ska movement.

Today's Song of the Day 'How Can You Stand There' is from the band's 2018 album "Here We Go Love." The song deals with today’s alarming political apathy in the U.K. as lead singer Dave Wakeling rails against the UK Government and Brexit. An interesting song given that it's backdrop is in the genre of Ska... but a song that will make you think.

Enjoy!!

A little history of this song..... Too Sweet by Hozier

The smell of success is… well, you know what it is: "too sweet." Hozier has never been about chasing the hit, but he’s got one regardless, as the Irish singer-songwriter’s “Unheard” EP quickly generated the first No. 1 Hot 100 single of his career when it was released in March 2024, in the form of 'Too Sweet,' a wry ballad about mismatched lovers. 'Too Sweet' is a boozy ballad where Hozier portrays himself as a guy who's more partial to a slug of whiskey and a lie-in than a sunrise and a kale smoothie. He's Irish... what can I say! Here's what Hozier had to say about the single: "I mean, it’s a song about somebody who wants to self-destruct and get trashed! You know, I’ve had a quiet laugh to myself about that. I’ve written songs that definitely deal with more complicated, more difficult themes, for sure. But I guess it’s something that’s fun and immediate and doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its appeal. And it’s also why maybe initially, when the choice came of putting it on the album, I thought that maybe it wouldn’t have worked. But there you go. It definitely worked with the public... 970 Million streams on Spotify!

Enjoy!!
